Greyfriars Bobby
Greyfriars Bobby
was the pet Skye terrier of John Gray - variably described as a policeman or
shepherd. When John died in 1858 it is said that Bobby lived on his grave, in
Greyfriars kirk yard, for 14 years. The local residents fed him and the Lord
Provost of Edinburgh paid for his dog licence each year. He was even awarded the
Freedom of the City.
When Bobby died in 1872 he was buried in the kirk yard next to
his master’s grave. A statue of the little terrier can be found in
Candlemakers Row, at the junction with George IV Bridge, opposite the entrance
to the kirk.
