Edinburgh
Cowgate
The Cowgate is in the valley to the south of the
Royal Mile
in Edinburgh. It runs from the eastern end of the
Grassmarket, passing under George IV and
South Bridges, to Holyrood Road, which in turn leads through the Canongate area to Holyrood
itself.
This was the route that cattle were taken from St. Cuthbert’s
Kirk, at the western end of the Nor’ Loch, to pastures at St. Leonard’s in
Holyrood Park.
