Edinburgh
Calton
Calton was one of the extensions to the New Town of
Edinburgh encircling the volcanic
Calton Hill.
Waterloo Place leads from Princes Street to the hill. On the southern side of the road is the Old
Calton Burial Ground in which can be found a monument with a statue of Abraham
Lincoln - as a memorial to the Scots who died during the American Civil Wall.
Against the cemetery's eastern wall, above a sheer rock face, is the surviving
part of Calton Gaol - once Edinburgh's main prison and, due to it's
shape, the building many visitors arriving by train from the east believe to be Edinburgh Castle.
