Arbroath Abbey

Arbroath Abbey was founded in the late 12th century and dedicated to Thomas Beckett; the seal of the abbey depicts Beckett's martyrdom.

On 6th April 1320 the Declaration of Arbroath was signed at the abbey. A re-enacting of the signing took place in the ruins of the Abbey in 1947 and then every two years after that until 1960. A committee has been formed to explore the feasibility of a repeat of the spectacular performance.

In 1951 Arbroath Abbey was in the eyes of the country again when the Stone of Destiny was stolen from Westminster Abbey in London. After searching most of Scotland the stone was discovered at the abbey and was returned to Westminster on the 11th April 1951.
