Dumfries
Queen of the South

Dumfries, the main town within the Dumfries & Galloway area of Scotland, sits on the River Nith, near the point where it flows into the Solway Firth.

Robert the Bruce murdered John Comyn in Greyfriar's Church in 1306 prior to being crowned king of Scots. The church had been founded by Devorguilla Balliol, the mother of John Balliol. She also founded Sweetheart Abbey, which stands 8km/5 miles south of Dumfries, in memory of her husband, also called John.

The local football team is known as Queen of the South.
