New Lanark
This 18th century village of New Lanark is located on the bank of the River Clyde, upstream from the Corra Linn falls and
a few miles from the burgh of Lanark itself.
In 1784, David Dale and Richard Arkwright identified the
site of the village as an ideal location for development and by 1793 Dale had
built four mills. In 1799, New Lanark was purchased by Robert Owen who developed
the site further.
In 1974 the New Lanark Heritage Trust was formed to
restore and develop the historic village, which became a World Heritage Site
in 2001.
