LanarkshireLanarkshire stretches southwest from Glasgow to the Lowther Hills in the Southern Uplands, which separate the area from Dumfries & Galloway. The M74 is the main road that passes through the area, roughly following the course of the River Clyde. Motherwell and Hamilton are the two biggest settlements in Lanarkshire and are separated by the motorway and river. Also between them lies Strathclyde Country Park which has an artificial loch on which a lot of water sports are taken part on. M&Ds, which is known as Scotland’s only theme park, is also within this park. To the west of Hamilton is East Kilbride with Blantyre, where explorer David Livingstone was born, to the north of the new town. Bothwell Castle lies roughly one mile northeast of the Blantyre and the site of the battle at Bothwell Bridge also lies nearby. Following the A72 southwest from Hamilton, following closely to the Clyde, leads to Lanark and New Lanark. Heading further southeast, now following the A73, leads to Biggar. |
