Fenwick
The church, which was built in 1643, is the burial place of
many Covenanters. One of the memorials is for James White who was shot in 1685
at Little Blackwood by Peter Inglis and his men. White's head was hacked from
his body and paraded Inglis before the garrison at Newmilnes. The head was then
used as a football.
Reverend William Guthrie, the first minister of the parish,
was ejected in 1664 and died the following year. He is buried in Brechin, but a
memorial was erected in 1854 by the villagers of Fenwick.
