Dumbarton

Dumbarton sits on the River Leven, at the point where it joins the River Clyde. The town is dominated by the castle that sits on the junction of the two rivers and because of its strategic position became the capital of the ancient kingdom of the Britons.

In the 19th century, Dumbarton's main industry was shipbuilding; the first steamers for Loch Lomond were built here. In 1869 the Cutty Sark was built by Scott & Linton before that company went into liquidation; the boat was completed and launched by William Denny and Brothers Ltd. The latter ship builder, which is also referred to simply as Denny, also built the TS Queen Mary and the SS Sir Walter Scott.
