Blantyre
Blantyre is based around a mill on the
banks of the River Clyde where David Livingstone,
the
explorer and missionary, was born in 1813.
Today the tenement, which consists of
twenty four one roomed apartments, shows how the families lived in Livingstone's
time.
Nearby is Bothwell Castle, which sits
high above the Clyde. The oldest section of this castle is the circular tower
which was built by the Moray family to protect themselves from king Edward I
during the Scottish Wars of Independence. Edward finally captured the castle in
September 1301.
