Bute

The Isle of Bute is the second largest of the islands in the Firth of Clyde; it lies to the north of Arran, the largest of the islands in the Firth. Bute is reached from the mainland by one of two ferries: the first sails from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay on the eastern side of the island; the second sails from Colintraive on the Cowal peninsula to Rhubodach at the northern end of the island and crosses the Kyles of Bute, the narrow stretch of water that separates the island from the mainland.

Rothesay is the largest settlement on Bute and sits on the bay of the same name on the eastern side of the island. The town’s pier and promenade were built in the 19th century on reclaimed land; originally the shoreline was just in front of Rothesay Castle.
