Turnberry

Turnberry is located on the Firth of Clyde, southwest of Ayr in Ayrshire; the town was built as golf resort for the club that was founded there in 1902.

While Turnberry is famous for golf, its castle is also known as the possible birthplace of Robert the Bruce. Or at least one possible birthplace as Lochmaben Castle in Dumfries & Galloway also makes this claim. The castle is now a ruin and its remains lie near to the 80 ft lighthouse.

The lighthouse itself was built in 1873 and is probably one of the most famous in the world. It is used as the symbol for the golf course, which hosted the British Open in 1977, 86 and 94 - it also stands next to the 17th hole.
