Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock in Ayrshire is located about 19km/12 miles
northeast of Ayr, at the point where the River Irvine is
joined by the Kilmarnock Water. The Kilmarnock Water is formed to the north of
the town, by the joining of the Fenwick and Craufurdland Waters.
John Walker (1805-1859) was born near the town, where he founded a grocery
shop in 1820. He later began to blend whisky with his
brand, originally known as Walker's Kilmarnock Whisky, becoming the world
famous Johnnie Walker in 1907.
Dean Castle sits to the north of the town and was built around 1300 by the
Earl of Kilmarnock.
