Deanston
About a mile to the west of Doune by the
River Teith, over the bridge built in 1535 is Deanston. This village was established along with the cotton mill set up here
in 1785. The mill provided jobs for about 1000 people in the early nineteenth
century and was enlarged in 1933, but closed in 1965.
The building was converted into a distillery with the
weaving halls being used as a warehouse. It prospered during the 1970s, but
ceased production from 1982 until 1990.
