Around Edinburgh

As Edinburgh has expanded a number of the surrounding villages have become part of the City of Edinburgh.

Starting from the east end of Princes Street:

  • The A1 heads east round Calton Hill, following Regent Road on to London Road. The A1140 then splits off, continuing east in to Portobello, while the A1 turns southeast then east again and on to Musselburgh and East Lothian.
  • The A7 heads roughly south across the North Bridge, where it splits to form the A701 with the latter continuing across South Bridge with the A7 running to the east. Both roads run parallel to each other for a while before the A7 turns further to the southeast and runs on to join the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass near Dalkeith in Midlothian. The A701 splits further; the original road continues south through Liberton while the A772 heads southeast through Gilmerton. Both these roads also join the A720.
  • The A900 heads northeast, following the course of Leith Walk, to Leith and adjacent Newhaven on the Firth of Forth. From Leith the A199 heads southeast, following close to the shore, in to Portobello and then on to Musselburgh; heading west on the A901, also following close to the shore, leads to Granton.

Returning to Princes Street, from the west end:

  • Continuing west, the A8 leads to Haymarket and on to Corstorphine; this road continues west, past Ingliston and Edinburgh Airport, to Newbridge where the M8 heads to Glasgow and the M9 to Stirling.
  • The A90 heads northwest, across the Dean Bridge, and joins up with the A902 that leads roughly east to Leith. Leaving either of these roads on the B9085 leads to Cramond. The A90 continues to South Queensferry, where it continues across the Forth Road Bridge into Fife.
  • The A700 heads south along Lothian Road and splits, with the A702 continuing south while the A700 heads east to join up with the A701.

From Haymarket, the A70 heads southwest along Dalry Road. This road then splits, with the A70 heading through Slateford before crossing the A720 and continuing to Colinton and Juniper Green; the A71 heads through Sighthill and then it to crosses the A720 and continues into West Lothian.
