Gilmerton
Gilmerton, which was originally a mining village located to the south of
Edinburgh, is now included within the city
boundaries. Land was acquired here in 1934 with the intention of building an
airport. The centre of the village has been a conservation area since 1977.
Gilmerton Cove is a series of tunnels and rooms carved out
of the sandstone about 3m/10ft below the main street of the village. It is
believed to have been the work of a local blacksmith around 1720, but there is
also a possibility it dates from before this time. Its exact purpose is also not
known.
