Tarbert

Tarbert sits on the shores of East Loch Tarbert, which is an inlet of Loch
Fyne; this small village marks the start of the Kintyre
peninsula. Tarbert was originally a fishing port, which was mentioned in the
Annals of Ulster in 836AD; the fishermen here pioneered the method of
fishing known as trawling, seining or ring-netting. The harbour is now mainly
used for yachts.
Overlooking
the village is the remains of Tarbert Castle. The castle itself dates from the
13th century, but all that remains is part of the 15th
century tower. Access to the castle is via steps on Harbour Road and the climb
is worthwhile for the views.
Continuing along
Harbour Road and on to Pier Road, leads to the ferry terminal for the 30 minute
crossing to Portavadie on the Cowal peninsula.
Further along is another pier used by the paddle steamer Waverley.
