Southend
Southend is the main settlement at the southern end of the Kintyre
peninsula in Argyll. The village is reached from
Campbeltown by the B842 or by following the narrow coast road around the
south-eastern corner of the peninsula.
Nearby is the
ruined 13th century chapel where you can find the Columba’s
footprints; this is where Columba is said to have first set foot in Scotland
on his journey from Ireland to Iona.
At
the eastern end of Dunaverty Bay is the rock where Dunaverty Castle used to
stand. This was the scene of a massacre in 1647 when 300 MacDonalds were killed.
Here you can find the
footprints of St. Columba who is said to have arrived here from Ireland
before continuing his journey to Iona.
