Rest & be Thankful

The Rest & be Thankful was part of the Military Road, from Dumbarton to Inveraray, built by Major William Caulfield in the 1740s.

Caulfield had a low budget, so he took the easy option by sticking low in the valley through Glen Croe, but paid the price with one steep, last gasp hairpin bend which brought him to the 860ft summit.

A stone inscribed Rest & Be Thankful was erected here when the road was completed (around 1749).

Between 1949 and 1970 the road was used as a hill climb and has also been used as a rally stage.
