Oban
Oban in Argyll
was developed in the 19th century as it was an ideal location for the steamer
services to the Inner and
Outer Hebrides. The
later arrival of the railway helped make Oban a popular holiday resort.
Ferries
sail regularly from here to
Mull,
Coll and Tiree in the Inner Hebrides; there a
further service to
Colonsay, also in the Inner Hebrides, 3 times a week; Barra
and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. There is also a service to
Kerrera,
the island that sits at the mouth of Oban Bay, sailing
from a jetty to the southwest of the town.
Overlooking the town from the east is McCaig's Tower - also
known as McCaig's Folly! The building was begun in 1897, but never
completed.
The
Cathedral of St. Columba was built in 1932-3.
