Machrihanish

Machrihanish is located on the western side of the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll, to the west of Campbeltown. The village stands at the southern end of Machrihanish Bay, which is the longest continuous stretch of sand in Argyll; however, this is a dangerous area for swimming.

Machrihanish itself was once a coal mining and salt producing area; the miners’ cottages can still be seen at Drumlemble. Machrihanish was connected to Campbeltown by a narrow-guage railway from 1903-36.

The area is now famous for its golf course, which stands between the beach and Campbeltown airport.
