Lorn

Lorn, the northwest area of Argyll, is bound by Lochs Etive, to the north, and Awe, to the southwest. The Firth of Lorn, between the mainland and Mull, marks the western boundary.

Heading north from Kilmartin, the A816 passes the junction with the B840 which heads northeast to Ford at the southwest end of Loch Awe. The B840 continues alongside the loch until it joins the A819, which heads south, through Glen Aray to Inveraray itself, or north to join the A85 Oban-Tyndrum road.

On the A816, just beyond the junction with the B840, are remains of Carnassarie Castle. Duncan of Auchenbreck lost the castle due to the part he played in the 1685 uprising against Charles II. The A816 continues north then west to the tip of Loch Craignish with the B8002 following the side of the loch southwest to Craignish Point. The A816 continues northwest to Arduaine, at the mouth of Loch Melfort, and then heads east, following the southern side of the loch, and then turning north towards Kilninver.

From Kilninver the B844 heads southwest to Clachan where the Atlantic Bridge crosses over to Seil, which along with Luing and Easdale are referred to as the slate islands.

The A816 heads northeast from Kilninver, following the southern side of Loch Feochan, and then heads north again towards Oban. From Oban the A85 heads roughly east towards Tyndrum where it joins the A82. Along the way it passes some stunning and even unusual scenery.
