Lochgilphead

Lochgilphead lies at the head of Loch Gilp, an inlet of Loch Fyne, and was set out as a planned town in the 18th century following the building of the road from Inveraray to Campbeltown. It was expanded following the building of the Crinan Canal.

From Lochgilphead the A83 continues south into Knapdale and Kintyre. Alternatively the A816 heads north, through Kilmartin Glen, to Oban.
