Kintyre West Coast
Approximate distance: 37.5 miles

From Tarbert the A83 heads west, crossing the narrow isthmus that separates East Loch Tarbert from its western counterpart. The road then follows the southern shore of West Loch Tarbert to Kennacraig, situated about a third of the way down the loch, where there is a regular ferry service to Ports Ellen and Askaig on Islay. The ferry terminal stands on the small island Eilean Ceann na Creige, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway.

From Kennacraig the B8001 heads southeast to Claonaig, the ferry port for Arran, on the eastern shore of Kintyre. The A83 continues southwest alongside West Loch Tarbert to the Atlantic coast with views across to Jura and Islay to the west and Gigha further south; Ireland can also be seen on a clear day. Continuing on the A83, now heading roughly south along one of the most exposed coasts in Scotland, leads to Tayinloan, the ferry port for Gigha itself.

The A83 continues south along the coast before heading southeast to Campbeltown.
