Kintyre East Coast
Approximate distance: 38.2 miles (from Tarbert to Campbeltown)

Arran from KintyreFrom Kennacraig on the west coast of Kintyre, the B8001 then heads southeast to Claonaig, the ferry port for Arran, on Kintyre's east coast. Staying on the B8001 and heading northeast from Claonaig leads to Skipness.

Skipness Castle belonged to the McSween family and dates from the 13th and 14th centuries; the tower was remodelled in the 16th century. Nearby Kilbrannan chapel dates from the 16th century.

Saddell CastleHeading southwest from Claonaig, the B842 follows the eastern coast of the Kintyre peninsula to Campbeltown with magnificent views of Arran for almost the entire journey. The road passes a number of small villages, including Carradale and Saddell. The abbey at Saddell was supposedly founded by Somerled, or his son Reginald, in 1148; it has been a ruin since the 16th century.

PeninverThe last village to pass through on the drive along the B842 is Peninver, which has fantastic views of Davaar Island and its lighthouse as well as Arran.
