Kilmartin Glen

The Kilmartin Glen area of Argyll is famous for its many ancient monuments; over 150, that date back to c.3000BC, have been discovered in the area. These include standing stones and stone circles as well as chambered cairns and crannogs.

Wicker and hide boats were used until the 18th century. The oldest, over 4000 years, carbon dated boat in Scotland was found in Kilmartin Glen.

At the southern end of the glen is Dunadd; this was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Scottish Dalriada founded by the Scotti after landing from Ireland around 500AD. At the top of the hill are the remains of a fort and at its centre a rock with carvings of a bowl, a footprint and a boar. These are believed to have been part of the inauguration ceremony for the kings that took place here.

At the northern end of the glen is the village of Kilmartin.
