Kilmartin

KilmartinThe village of Kilmartin lies at the northern end of Kilmartin Glen in Argyll, on the A816 that runs from Lochgilphead, to the south of Kilmartin, to Oban. The Kilmartin Glen area is famous for its many ancient monuments and the Museum of Ancient Culture, which is located within Kilmartin House, gives details of the area and the many historical monuments that can be found there.

The church dates from 1835 and within the churchyard are many carved grave slabs, some of the oldest in Scotland. There are also a couple of carved crosses that used to stand outside the church, but are now inside for their protection.

In 1314 Robert the Bruce gave the land round Kilmartin to Sir Colin Campbell.
