Castle Stalker
Castle Stalker, which was built c.1540, was once the property
of the MacDougalls, but was later given to the Stewarts. In 1490 Duncan Stewart
of Appin offered the castle to James IV as a hunting lodge. The Gaelic name of
the castle, Caisteal Stalcair, means castle of the hunter.
The castle changed hands further between Stewarts and
Campbells. In 1745 it was used as a garrison for royal troops. The castle was abandoned c.1780
and fell to ruin. It was restored in the 1960s
and is now privately owned.
