Campbeltown

Campbeltown, set in a deep bay sheltered by Davaar Island, is one of the largest towns in Argyll and has a population of 6000. In the 16th century it was known as Kinlochkilkerran and was renamed in the 17th century by the Earl of Argyll who's name was Campbell.

Campbeltown's hey day was in the Victorian era when ship building was strong and the fishing fleet was vast, and Campbeltown Loch was said to be filled by whisky. This saying came about because of the towns 34 distilleries. Today only Glengyle, Glen Scotia and Springbank distilleries are still in use. The family owned Springbank distillery on the Longrow is the only distillery in Scotland that does everything from malting to bottling.

One of the most popular day trips from Campbeltown is the walk to Davaar Island, linked to the peninsula at low tide by a mile long shoal. You have about 6 hours to do the return journey from Kildalloig Point two miles from the east side of town.

The B842 heads west from the town into southern Kintyre; at Stewarton the roads heads south to Southend while the B843 continues west to Machrihanish.
