Historic Buildings in ScotlandMonuments and MemorialsAlexander III - a memorial stands by the side of the A921 near Kinghorn to mark the spot near where the king died in 1286. John Cobb - a memorial cairn stands by the side of the A82, as it runs alongside Loch Ness heading north to Drumnadrochit, to mark where Cobb was killed on the loch in 1952 while trying to break the water speed record. The Glenfinnan Monument stands at the head of Loch Shiel, near where the Jacobite Standard was raised before the Rising of 1745. The Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, is a monument to the author Sir Walter Scott. There is also a statue of the writer in Selkirk and his home, Abbotsford in the Borders, contains many of his personal items including his writing desk and vast library. The National Wallace Monument on the Abbey Craig, northeast of Stirling, was built in honour of Sir William Wallace. There are a number of other statues in honour of the Guardian of Scotland elsewhere through the country - at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle; near Dryburgh Abbey in the Scottish Borders.
